I want to prune back a rhododendron. When is the best time and how severely can I cut it back?

It has just finished blooming. I live in N. California.

I want to prune back a rhododendron. When is the best time and how severely can I cut it back?
I chopped mine back to ugly stumps last fall and they're already greening out this spring. We expect they'll be back to full greenery by next summer.
Reply:Just after it finishes blooming is the time to cut back,and you can cut back as low as you want.It will grow back.If you live in a cold climate,protect it in the winter by covering it with burlap.
Reply:Cut it as much as you want. I tried to get rid of one by cutting it to the stump and pouring gasoline on it. It still came back...
